Romelia Wildlife Refugee Volunteer programme
Romelia National Wildlife Refugee Joint Category
This Reserve was established to protect a transitional forest which is part of a huge biological corridor and shelters a wide biodiversity. A total of 127 species of trees have been identified as well as many different animal species, such as howler monkeys, iguanas, and both terrestrial and sea birds. From June to November, hundreds of marine turtles come to the beach to deposit their eggs. The project works in the research, recreation, environmental education and sustainable utilization of natural resources.
Volunteer Program
The volunteers program makes emphasis in the development of sustainable agricultural activities, conservation and studies of the turtles, construction of incubators to protect the eggs from harvesting and depredation as well as in cleaning of the beaches.
The volunteers also make nightly patrols to do scientific data collection, including measuring turtles and marking them and liberating newborn turtles. It is also important to evaluate and protect populations of sea turtles that nest on the beaches of the Refuge and on adjacent beaches.
It has been determined that significant threats and looting by local people and high tides cause harm to avoid nests that hatch and the volunteer program has helped to achieve a satisfactory hatching success The sea turtle conservation program is a scientific based conservation activity which tries to increase the amount of sea turtle hatchlings to give higher survival possibilities to this wonderful reptiles. This project was created with a conservation purpose and helps this area to preserve the sea turtles and the associated ecosystems.
As a volunteer you will be able to do night patrols , work in the hatchery, general infrastructure maintenance , counting baby turtles and releasing them, taking biometric measurements of turtles, making Information signs , beach cleaning working in the organic gardens and in trail building activities.
The reserve is 30 minutes by walk from Montezuma a beautiful beach town and many other breathtakingly beautiful places.
